Record Growth in International Enrollments: Indian Students Lead New Zealand’s Education Boom

New Zealand’s education sector has reported significant growth in international student enrollments, with a 24% year-on-year increase, according to Tertiary Education and Skills Minister Penny Simmonds. Between January and August 2024, the country welcomed 73,535 international students, marking a 6% rise compared to the same period in 2023.

“This remarkable growth demonstrates New Zealand’s global reputation for providing high-quality education,” said Minister Simmonds. She noted that enrollments in the first eight months of 2024 have already surpassed the total for all of 2023. The influx of international students not only boosts the country’s economy but also supports local businesses and creates jobs across communities.

Regional Success Drives Enrollment Surge

Regions across New Zealand experienced substantial growth in international enrollments, with Gisborne leading with a 126% increase—the highest in the country. Marlborough reported a 45% rise, while Hawke’s Bay and Waikato saw growth rates of 28% and 26%, respectively.

“These regional achievements highlight the commitment of our education providers,” said Simmonds, expressing optimism that enrollment figures will continue to climb by the end of the year. She emphasized that international education goes beyond numbers, fostering global connections and driving innovation while positioning New Zealand as a leader in education and research.

Increasing Diversity in Student Demographics

The diversity of New Zealand’s international student body is also expanding. While India and China remain the largest contributors, students from the United States, Thailand, Germany, Sri Lanka, and the Philippines now account for 3% of total enrollments.

Minister Simmonds highlighted this diversity as a core strength of New Zealand’s education sector, which has shown resilience and adaptability in recovering from the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic. “Every funded part of the education sector has grown this year, with universities now only 7% below pre-pandemic levels,” she added.

The latest figures underline the robust and adaptable nature of New Zealand’s education providers. Continued efforts to attract diverse students are expected to sustain this upward trend.

OpenAI has launched ChatGPT Pro, a $200-per-month subscription plan aimed at power users of its AI chatbot platform. The new tier offers unlimited access to OpenAI’s models, including the latest version of its advanced reasoning model, o1, which provides enhanced capabilities for coding, math, and complex tasks.

During a press conference, Jason Wei, a technical staff member at OpenAI, described ChatGPT Pro as ideal for users pushing the platform to its limits. The o1 model, designed for “reasoning” tasks, employs a method of self-checking as it works through problems, improving accuracy but increasing response times.

The latest version of o1 surpasses its preview in performance, speed, and accuracy. It now supports image uploads and has been optimized for concise reasoning. OpenAI reports a 34% reduction in major errors on challenging questions compared to the preview version. However, o1 still lags behind the preview on certain benchmarks like MLE-Bench, which evaluates AI performance in machine learning engineering.

Subscribers to ChatGPT Pro gain access to an enhanced “o1 Pro Mode,” which uses additional computational power for more accurate responses to complex queries. OpenAI claims this mode significantly reduces errors in areas like programming and data science.

While all paid ChatGPT users can access the standard o1 model, Pro subscribers receive exclusive benefits, including unlimited access to GPT-4o and Advanced Voice Mode for human-like conversations. OpenAI also plans to expand o1’s functionality with features like web browsing and file uploads in the coming months.

The $200 monthly price tag makes ChatGPT Pro OpenAI’s costliest offering, a steep jump from the $20-per-month ChatGPT Plus. To attract high-value users, OpenAI announced a grant program, offering free subscriptions to select medical researchers and professionals in other disciplines.

This premium launch comes as OpenAI faces financial pressures, with reported annual losses of $5 billion despite $300 million in monthly revenue. ChatGPT remains a significant revenue driver, boasting over 300 million weekly active users, 10 million of whom are paying subscribers.

The move aligns with OpenAI’s strategy to offset costs while meeting the demands of its most dedicated users. However, the high price may deter all but the most committed from upgrading.

Indian Startups Create Over 1.66 Million Jobs Across 55 Industries

Startups recognized under the Indian government’s Startup India initiative have played a crucial role in job creation, generating over 1.66 million direct employment opportunities across 55 industries, according to the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT). These startups, operating beyond traditional technology sectors, are driving workforce expansion, fostering innovation, and contributing significantly to India’s economic growth.

The latest data, as of October 31, 2024, highlights substantial contributions from various industries. IT services led the way, creating 2,04,119 jobs, followed by healthcare and life sciences with 1,47,639 jobs. Education, construction, and food and beverages industries contributed 90,414, 88,702, and 88,468 jobs, respectively. Meanwhile, finance technology startups generated 56,819 jobs, with notable support from green technology, renewable energy, and professional services, which collectively added over 1,63,000 jobs. Emerging fields like artificial intelligence and robotics also showcased potential, contributing 23,918 and 5,956 jobs, respectively.

The Startup India initiative, launched on January 16, 2016, has provided a structured framework to nurture and support startups at various stages of their lifecycle. Key government programs such as the Fund of Funds for Startups (FFS), Startup India Seed Fund Scheme (SISFS), and Credit Guarantee Scheme for Startups (CGSS) have been instrumental in fostering entrepreneurial growth. India Launches Digital ePAN with QR Code, Aiming to Streamline Identity Verification and Support Digitization

The Government of India has introduced an upgraded version of the Permanent Account Number (PAN) system with the launch of ePAN, a digital version featuring a dynamic QR code. This initiative, announced by the Ministry of Finance on November 26, 2024, is aimed at simplifying identity verification and supporting the government’s digitization efforts. The new ePAN system is expected to reduce dependence on physical PAN cards, although challenges in widespread adoption remain.

The ePAN is part of the larger PAN 2.0 project, which has been allocated an investment of Rs 1,435 crore. It enables a paperless, no-cost process to obtain or update PANs, with ePANs being delivered to applicants’ registered email addresses. Individuals who still prefer physical PAN cards can request one for a nominal fee.

A key upgrade in this new system is the inclusion of a dynamic QR code, which experts believe could expand ePAN’s role beyond just tax identification. This feature may facilitate its use for KYC (Know Your Customer) and identity verification, areas where the previous version was limited. Legal and financial analysts suggest that if address details are incorporated into the QR code, ePAN could potentially replace supplementary documents like Aadhaar for specific transactions.

However, challenges remain for the adoption of ePAN. The regulatory framework and digital infrastructure must evolve to ensure its acceptance for electronic KYC purposes. Additionally, some institutions may still require physical PAN cards for verification, similar to the case with Aadhaar, where banks often ask for physical copies despite the availability of m-Aadhaar.

The launch of PAN 2.0 represents a significant step toward reducing paperwork and increasing convenience for users. However, its success will depend on institutional adoption and regulatory approval, with ePAN likely coexisting with physical PAN cards for the foreseeable future.

IndiGo Ranked Among World’s Worst Airlines by AirHelp, Airline Disputes Credibility of Survey

India’s largest airline, IndiGo, has been ranked 103rd out of 109 airlines in the latest global rankings released by European claims processing agency AirHelp. The annual rankings assess airlines based on on-time performance, customer satisfaction, and compensation claim handling, with each criterion holding equal weightage. IndiGo received a score of 4.80, while Air India, the only other Indian carrier on the list, ranked 61st with a score of 6.15.

Brussels Airlines topped the rankings with a score of 8.12, followed by Qatar Airways (8.11) and United Airlines (8.04). IndiGo, however, has strongly refuted the survey results, questioning the methodology and sample size used by AirHelp.

“IndiGo has consistently excelled in punctuality and has the lowest customer complaint ratio for an airline of its scale, as per data from the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA). The survey by AirHelp, which does not report India-specific data or align with global aviation compensation guidelines, lacks credibility,” the airline said in a statement.

With a domestic market share exceeding 60% and over 100 million passengers carried in 2023, IndiGo emphasized its commitment to providing on-time and hassle-free travel. DGCA’s October air traffic report placed IndiGo as the leader in on-time performance at major metro airports and reported just 0.2 complaints per 10,000 passengers for the airline.

AirHelp claims its rankings are derived from data sourced through multiple commercial and governmental channels, though it remains unclear if DGCA data is considered in its assessments. IndiGo has reaffirmed its dedication to delivering affordable and reliable services, rejecting the findings of the AirHelp survey.
