Licious acquires ‘My Chicken and More’ to build Omni-Channel Presence

In a strategic move to boost its offline presence, direct-to-consumer (D2C) meat and seafood brand Licious has acquired Bengaluru-based retailer ‘My Chicken and More’, which operates 23 stores across the city. This acquisition marks a significant step for Licious as it strengthens its foothold in South India’s retail market.

“The acquisition will enable us to rapidly scale our offline presence in South India,” said Licious Co-Founder Vivek Gupta, highlighting the company’s ambitious plans to build a broader omnichannel network. The deal, structured as a cash and equity transaction, will bring the total number of Licious stores in Bengaluru to 26. Previously, the brand operated three stores in the city, all while focusing on its successful online business model.

While Licious is yet to disclose the financial details, industry reports suggest the transaction is valued at approximately ₹200 crore. Co-founders Gupta and Abhay Hanjura emphasized the strength of ‘My Chicken and More’, noting its efficiency in revenue generation, profitability, and supply chain management. These factors made the acquisition an attractive proposition for Licious as it looks to deepen its offline engagement.

Founded in 2007, ‘My Chicken and More’ has grown into a well-regarded regional player. Between 2021 and 2023, the brand expanded its retail footprint from 10 to 23 stores, generating revenues of approximately ₹110 crore in 2023. The retailer processes 1.6 million to 1.8 million orders annually, with some locations seeing monthly footfalls of up to 12,000 customers. The company’s founder, S. Mahesha, expressed excitement over the partnership, stating, “Partnering with Licious is not just about growth for us, it’s about aligning with a shared vision of providing consumers with high-quality and hygienic meat.”

For Licious, which is owned by Delightful Gourmet, the acquisition aligns with its broader strategy of building an omnichannel presence. The company’s online platform already serves 4 million households, with 1.2 million consumers ordering monthly via the Licious app. Its flagship loyalty program, Infiniti, has garnered 2 lakh weekly active subscribers, contributing 58% to the monthly business. Licious operates from five processing centres and serves 20 cities through a network of 100 delivery centres.

Looking ahead, Licious is aiming to dramatically expand its physical retail presence. The company plans to open 500 offline stores across key markets over the next few years, positioning itself as a dominant player in both digital and physical retail in India’s burgeoning meat and seafood sector.

Government’s IndiaAI Datasets Platform To Be Operational By January 2025

India will soon introduce an open-source forum for hosting datasets, known as the IndiaAI Datasets Platform, by January 2025, announced National eGovernance Division (NeGD) Chief Executive Nand Kumarum on October 9, 2024. This platform will be a key component of the government’s ₹10,000 crore IndiaAI Mission, designed to enable developers to create, train, and deploy their own AI models using data from both central and state governments, as well as the private sector.

The initiative is part of India’s larger effort to build a robust AI ecosystem. Last month, Abhishek Singh, Additional Secretary to the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology and CEO of Digital India Corporation, shared that the government was establishing Data Management Offices as part of the platform. These offices will ensure that the collected data is AI-compatible. Furthermore, Data Management Units will be set up within every government department to streamline the data collection process.

This announcement follows the Ministry of Science and Technology’s launch of BharatGen, a generative AI (GenAI) initiative aimed at creating a multimodal Large Language Model (LLM) for Indian languages, signaling India’s growing focus on AI capabilities.

“The idea primarily is like HuggingFace – you have models, you have datasets, and you have people coming up and using those datasets and building models. We are trying to do something similar,” Kumarum said, as per the report.

Private sector companies are also contributing to the AI landscape. Tech Mahindra’s Project Indus, initially trained in Hindi and 37 dialects, is set to expand its coverage to more Indic languages. Meanwhile, Ola announced its Krutrim LLM in December 2023, trained in Indian languages to serve a “1.4 billion India.” Krutrim, said to be comparable to ChatGPT, can write in 10 Indian languages and understand 20. While Ola CEO Bhavish Aggarwal claimed Krutrim could outperform GPT-4 in Indic languages, users have reported inaccuracies in some responses generated by the model.

Harnessing the Power of Data: Improving Efficiency in Blue-Collar Operations

In a country where blue-collar workers form the backbone of our economy, harnessing data to improve efficiency is not just a strategy, it’s essential for sustainable growth. Let’s explore how data can enhance blue-collar operations in India and what steps organizations can take to unlock their full potential.

The Changing Landscape of Blue-Collar Workers in India

India’s blue-collar workforce is vast and diverse, spanning manufacturing, construction, logistics and services. Traditionally, these sectors have relied on manual processes and anecdotal insights, which can lead to inefficiencies and missed opportunities. However, with the rapid advancement of technology and data analytics, there is a significant opportunity to modernize operations.

In an era where data-driven decision-making is paramount, industries are beginning to understand that effective use of data can lead to improved productivity, enhanced safety and better workforce management. The challenge lies in integrating these insights into everyday operations.

Why Data Matters

1. Operational Efficiency

Data analytics can uncover inefficiencies in workflows that might otherwise go unnoticed. By tracking key performance indicators (KPIs) such as output rates, equipment utilization and labor productivity, organizations can identify bottlenecks and optimize processes. For instance, a manufacturing unit can analyze machine performance data to schedule maintenance proactively, reducing downtime and increasing overall efficiency.

2. Predictive Maintenance

In industries where machinery and equipment play a crucial role, predictive maintenance powered by data analytics can be a game-changer. By analyzing data from sensors and equipment, organizations can anticipate failures before they occur, minimizing unplanned downtime and extending the life of critical assets. This approach is particularly valuable in construction, where equipment availability can significantly impact project timelines.

3. Enhanced Safety Measures

Safety is a top priority in blue-collar operations. Data analytics can help identify patterns in workplace incidents and potential hazards. For example, by analyzing historical accident data, companies can pinpoint high-risk areas and develop targeted training programs to mitigate risks. Additionally, wearable technology can monitor real-time conditions, providing insights that enhance safety protocols and promote a culture of safety.

4. Workforce Optimization

Understanding workforce dynamics is vital for improving efficiency. Data can help organizations track attendance, skill levels and performance metrics, enabling better resource allocation. For example, if data shows that a particular team consistently meets production targets, managers can investigate the factors contributing to their success and replicate those practices across other teams.

Implementing Data-Driven Strategies

To harness the power of data effectively, organizations must take a strategic approach. Here are key steps to consider:

1. Invest in Technology

Adopting the right technology is essential for data collection and analysis. From IoT devices to cloud-based analytics platforms, organizations need tools that provide real-time insights. In India, where mobile technology is widespread, leveraging mobile applications for data collection can enhance accessibility and user engagement.

2. Train and Empower Employees

Data literacy is crucial. Employees at all levels should be trained to understand and interpret data relevant to their roles. This empowers them to make informed decisions and fosters a culture of continuous improvement. Investing in training programs that enhance data skills will lead to a more agile and responsive workforce.

3. Foster a Data-Driven Culture

Creating a culture that values data involves encouraging open communication and collaboration around data insights. Leaders should promote data-driven decision-making, demonstrating how data can inform strategic choices. Recognizing and rewarding teams for their data-driven initiatives can further motivate staff to engage with data actively.

4. Continuous Monitoring and Adaptation

Data analytics is an ongoing process. Regularly reviewing performance metrics and adjusting strategies based on insights gained is essential. By staying agile and responsive to data trends, organizations can continuously refine their operations for better outcomes.

Harnessing the power of data is essential for improving efficiency in blue-collar operations in India. As we navigate a rapidly changing economic landscape, embracing data analytics can drive productivity, enhance safety and empower our workforce. For companies in the blue-collar sector, the journey toward becoming data-driven may require investment and cultural shifts, but the rewards such as greater efficiency, reduced costs and improved outcomes are well worth the effort.

In a country where blue-collar workers are vital to our economy, leveraging data effectively will not only enhance business performance but also contribute to the overall growth and development of India’s workforce. Together, let’s embrace the power of data to build a more efficient and prosperous future.
