The Indian Institute of Technology, Madras (IIT-M), has unveiled plans to invest up to Rs 5 crore in select sports startups over the next five years. This announcement was made during a two-day sports tech startups conclave in New Delhi. IIT Madras aims to support at least 200 sports tech startups through this initiative, with funding provided by IIT Madras Pravartak Technologies.

Prof. V Kamakoti, Director of IIT Madras, highlighted the growing role of technology in sports and the institute’s commitment to integrating the two fields. “The market for sports technology is significant, and it is essential to develop indigenous products for Indian sportspersons, covering aspects from health monitoring to performance improvement,” he stated.

In addition, IIT Madras will introduce a four-year course on sports science starting in the 2025 academic session. This course, part of the Centre of Excellence in Sports Science and Analytics (CESSA), aims to foster deep tech startups in the sports sector. Professor Mahesh Panchagula, head of CESSA, mentioned ongoing efforts to finalize the course details, including eligibility and structure. Currently, the institute offers short courses in sports psychology, exercise physiology, strength conditioning, and nutrition, accessible to all.

The Madras-based institute has also developed expertise in sports such as boxing, judo, wrestling, game and training analysis, and sensor technology for tennis and badminton. Notably, ESPN utilizes IIT Madras’ smart tech to enhance game viewing and fan engagement.

IIT Madras supports Indian government initiatives and sports bodies’ efforts towards hosting the Olympics in 2036, aiming for Indian athletes to win at least 50 medals. The institute collaborates with the National Centre for Sports Sciences and Research (NCSSR) to address issues in AI, data analysis, and archery. Additionally, IIT Madras launched EduSwasth, an initiative to integrate technology into school physical education in India.
