UN Report: 1 in 4 Countries Ban Phones in Schools Amid Concerns Over Student Performance
According to a recent report from the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), only 25% of countries have prohibited smartphone use in schools despite evidence linking excessive technology use to decreased student performance.
The Global Education Monitoring (GEM) report highlights that even the mere presence of mobile devices can distract students and hinder their learning.
A UN education expert emphasized that an overemphasis on technology in education often leads to detrimental effects, stating that devices, including smartphones, should only be integrated into classrooms when they enhance learning outcomes.
The report warns that student use of devices beyond a moderate level can negatively impact academic performance, as smartphones and computers can disrupt both classroom activities and home learning environments.
