Local to Global: DegreeLabs Vision for Bridging Gaps in Indian Higher Education through TNE Revolution

New Delhi: Transnational Education (TNE) has emerged as a dynamic domain, fostering global collaboration in higher education. This paradigm involves partnerships between educational institutions from different countries, enabling students to pursue academic programs without being physically present in the host country. In the context of Indian Higher Educational Institutions (HEIs), TNE has gained prominence as a means to enhance the quality and diversity of educational offerings.

The role of technology in the TNE enrollment process is pivotal, streamlining administrative tasks, facilitating cross-border communication, and providing a seamless platform for students to access and engage with educational resources. Through innovative technological solutions, TNE not only transcends geographical barriers but also contributes to the internationalization of education, offering students a broader spectrum of learning opportunities. In this regard, Zain Khan, ObserveNow, interacted with Shrenik Parmar, Founder & CEO, DegreeLabs.

Here are a few excerpts from the interview:

Can you outline DegreeLabs’ vision and strategy in the TNE domain, particularly your collaborative model with Indian HEIs?

DegreeLabs is dedicated to “Making global education local.” Our strategy revolves around strong partnerships with India’s leading HEIs, offering students unique pathways to attain prestigious foreign degrees. By harnessing the NEP 2020 framework, we facilitate accessible and affordable TNE programs, such as Credit Transfers and Dual Degrees. Our model enables students to start their academic journey in India and seamlessly progress to internationally recognized qualifications. We’re bridging the gap, ensuring that global academic excellence is within reach of aspiring Indian students.

How does DegreeLabs integrate technology into the TNE enrollment process, and what sets your platform apart?

At DegreeLabs, technology is a cornerstone, providing a robust platform that orchestrates the TNE enrollment process. Our digital infrastructure offers a seamless journey from program discovery to enrollment, all while emphasizing on-campus education’s rich experience. We’ve devised a system that not only simplifies the application process but also provides real-time support, distinguishing us as a conduit for quality on-campus TNE programs.

What inspired the creation of DegreeLabs, and how is it transforming India’s higher education landscape?

The genesis of DegreeLabs was motivated by a gap in the Indian education system—the lack of accessible global education opportunities. We’ve since become a transformative force, enabling students to commence their education with Indian HEIs and advance to globally recognized foreign universities. Our network now includes over 20 Indian HEIs, offering 150 diverse TNE courses, and partnerships allowing for transfer opportunities to 85 foreign HEIs across 15 countries.

What advantages do Indian students gain from TNE programs?

TNE offers Indian students an unparalleled mix of local accessibility and global excellence. Our programs are designed to be financially attainable while providing the benefits of a foreign education. Students engage with global curricula, receive exposure to diverse academic environments, and are positioned for success in the international job market—all while enjoying the foundational experience of on-campus learning in India.

What are DegreeLabs’ future aspirations in the TNE sector?

DegreeLabs envisions expanding the TNE ecosystem, positioning India as a hub for high-quality, on-campus international education. Our future is about scaling our offerings, aligning them with global standards, and fostering academic innovation. We’re committed to nurturing the global aspirations of our students, ensuring their journey with us is not just educational but transformational.

Govt asks platforms not to carry ads of fraudulent loan apps; seeks swift removal of such apps

New Delhi: The government has directed social media and other online platforms to ensure that they do not host advertisements of fraudulent loan apps, Union Minister Rajeev Chandrasekhar said on Wednesday.

Chandrasekhar said the IT ministry has made it clear to platforms that they cannot carry advertisements of fraudulent and illegal loan apps as they are misleading and exploiting people who are using the internet.

“One of the areas we are now cracking down on is advertising of fraudulent loan apps that many platforms are carrying and we have, through yesterday’s advisory, made it clear that no intermediary can carry advertisements of fraudulent loan apps because it will be misleading and exploits people who are using the internet,” the Minister of State for Electronics and IT said on the sidelines of an event.

Concerns are growing over illegal instant loan apps that have come up in recent times. These fraud loan apps — which lend small amounts to desperate borrowers at exorbitantly high interest rates and often resort to harassment, even blackmailing later — are flourishing, and are openly being advertised on online platforms.

In the advisory issued on Tuesday, the IT Ministry directed that “intermediaries and platforms should take additional measures to not permit any advertisements of illegal loan and betting apps having the potential to scam and mislead the users, the consequences of which will be the sole responsibility of the intermediaries and platforms”.

Earlier this month, the government informed Parliament that Google has suspended or removed over 2,500 fraudulent loan apps from its Play Store between April 2021 and July 2022. The government is constantly engaged with the RBI and other regulators and stakeholders concerned to control fraudulent loan apps, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman had said in a written reply to the Lok Sabha this month. As part of steps taken to control fraudulent loan apps, she said, the RBI has shared a ‘whitelist’ of legal apps with the Government of India, and this list was shared by the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (Meity) with Google, whose app store is the primary source of distribution of digital lending apps. Between April 2021 and July 2022, Google also reviewed approximately 3,500 to 4,000 loan lending apps and suspended or removed over 2,500 fraudulent loan apps from its Play Store.

Taking care of mental well-being important to retain talent, says Vishal Sharma, Global Head of HR , Glenmark Pharmaceuticals Ltd

New Delhi: In the dynamic landscape of human resources, crafting a robust talent strategy and hiring approach is paramount for organizational success. As businesses navigate the complexities of the modern workforce, the perfect recipe involves a delicate balance that considers the evolving needs of the industry and the aspirations of the workforce.

Anticipating the requirements of the future, organizations are challenged to adopt innovative approaches that blend the experience of veteran professionals, the fresh perspectives of newcomers, and the unique contributions of individuals returning to the workforce, especially women. In this regard, Shreya Singh, ObserveNow, interacted with Vishal Sharma, Global Head of HR for Operations, Manufacturing & Quality functions, Glenmark Pharmaceuticals Ltd.

Here are a few excerpts from the interview:

What’s your organization’s approach to talent strategy and hiring? Is there a perfect recipe to get it all right or is it always a balanced view?

There is no perfect recipe but what works for your organization is most critical. Talent is scarce, and precious, and has to be handled with utmost care and foresight. There is a seamless interaction between hiring and our talent strategy. Our talent strategy decides what kind of people we bring in and revolves around a robust internal talent marketplace, providing excellent experience at every life cycle stage and a density of conversation around talent by the leadership team. Our internal talent marketplace places a huge emphasis on quick talent reallocation to strategically important projects and roles.

We always look for deep functional strengths and the right behaviors in our hiring.

As an HR leader, how do you ensure that the workforce you have today is the one you need tomorrow? What is your master plan for the skills update of the team?

To understand the skill update of the team, we first understand the skill requirement of the organization. Organizational skill requirements dictate what skills our employees should have. It means we fully understand our business strategy over the short to medium term. We are very focused on our skill updation program which means a targeted learning approach. We also know what not to learn. Our approach is high on retention and application of the acquired skills.

What innovative approaches are businesses adopting to retain top talent in an increasingly competitive market? How are they prioritizing employee well-being and career growth?

Businesses need to understand that not every employee is a talent. For truly talented employees, a flashlight approach is very critical. You need to remove distractions around the talented employees and ensure they are focused on their careers. The meaning of career growth has changed. Talent needs to grow horizontally and vertically. Such talent must be roped in to retain other talented individuals. No talent can be retained if you are not taking care of psychological well-being and, especially mental well-being.

How do you approach diversity and inclusion in your hiring practices, particularly in the context of hiring veteran workforce or Women returning to work?

Our hiring policies and practices are meant to enhance merit-based diversity and inclusion. We always ensure every role is open for all kinds of people from different backgrounds. Women returning to work are treated in line with our talent management guidelines and they are encouraged to apply.

In what ways can your organization support and empower fresher to understand work life, chart a path for them, and find their sense of purpose in alignment with the company’s vision?

Freshers with the right attitude should be a part of your long-term plan. Organizations should not be in a hurry to give them a role and expect miracles and should be encouraged to find out what they like to do. These freshers after a few years, will become the backbone of the organization’s success.

Is there any advice you would like to give to the new HR Professionals entering the industry?

Go deep, learn like there is no tomorrow, and be a polymath.HR as a profession, does not have all the answers. Learn to dive into other functions.
