Karnam Malleswari, a 46-year-old former Indian weight-lifter recipient, has been appointed as the first vice-chancellor of the Delhi Sports University. She is the first woman from India to receive a medal in the Olympics in Sydney in 2000. The declaration was made in the presence of the Deputy Chief Minister and Minister of Education, Manish Sisodia, and Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal.
Commenting on her appointment CM Kejriwal said it's a dream that came true for him to open Delhi Sports University and the student's degree will be equal to degrees in mainstream courses after graduation. In 2019, the Delhi Assembly has passed a bill of the proposal to establish a university to give graduation, post-graduation, and doctorate degrees in football, cricket, hockey, and other sports.
Sisodia stated the goal of building a world-class sports university not to produce jobs but to offer room for individuals to develop their sporting skills at last. "The Delhi Sports University will be a primary sporting Varsity, an important element in the development and appreciation of cultural diversity rich in the development of sports facilities and to provide world world-class coaching.
Karnam Malleswari at the age of 12 started her career in weight lifting and at the age of 15, she went to the Delhi national camp. She won two bronze medals in 1993 and 1996 and two gold medals in 1994 and 1995. after three years, she earned two silver medals in Asian Games held in 1994 and 1998. Karnam has nationally and internationally recorded her name in many accomplishments. In 1994 she was honored with the Arjuna Award, in 1999 with the Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna, and in 1999 with the Padma Shri Award, India's highest sporting honor.
"Once the lockdown comes to an end, let the schools get reopen, they will undertake a talent quest for sports kids. Many kids have keen interests in sport but are unable to continue their athletic ambition because of lacking infrastructure "Karnam remarked.
The only aim is to encourage the brilliant individuals who deserve it. Who is overshadowed and doesn't obtain the right guidelines to take off their career in sports.
