India Marks 76 Years of the Constitution, Honouring the Ideals that Built the World’s Largest Democracy

Constitution Day

India is celebrating Constitution Day today, marking 76 years since the adoption of the country’s guiding document that laid the foundation for the world’s largest democracy. The day serves as a reminder of the principles of justice, liberty, equality and fraternity that shaped the Republic and continue to guide its social, political and institutional framework. Constitution Day, also known as Samvidhan Diwas, is observed annually on November 26 in memory of the moment in 1949 when the Constituent Assembly adopted the Constitution, which later came into force on January 26, 1950.

Across the country, government institutions, schools, universities and civic organisations are holding events to raise awareness about constitutional values and the rights and duties of citizens. Many public offices began the day with a reading of the Preamble to reaffirm the spirit of democratic participation and collective responsibility. Leaders and legal experts have also highlighted the importance of safeguarding constitutional morality at a time when governance, technology and social change are rapidly evolving.

The contribution of India’s first law-makers, including Dr. B. R. Ambedkar and members of the Constituent Assembly, is being acknowledged for their vision in crafting a document that has withstood decades of transformation. With 105 amendments over the years, the Constitution has adapted to new realities while maintaining its foundational pillars of inclusivity and fairness. Analysts note that the durability of the Constitution lies in its ability to balance continuity with reform and empower every institution, from the judiciary to local self-governance.

As the nation reflects on 76 years of constitutional governance, the central message of the day remains clear: the strength of the Republic depends not only on the text of the Constitution but on the collective commitment of citizens to uphold its values.
