Google Chrome Integrates On-Device AI to Combat Tech Support Scams

Google has announced a significant enhancement to its Chrome browser aimed at protecting users from tech support scams. With the release of Chrome version 137, the company is deploying Gemini Nano, an on-device artificial intelligence model, to detect and block fraudulent websites in real time.

Tech support scams often involve deceptive websites that mimic legitimate alerts, prompting users to believe their systems are compromised. These sites may display persistent pop-ups, fake virus warnings, or even lock user interfaces to coerce individuals into contacting bogus support numbers. Traditional security measures, which rely on known threat databases, can struggle to keep pace with the rapidly evolving tactics of scammers.

Gemini Nano addresses this challenge by operating directly on user’s devices, enabling immediate analysis of web content and behavior. By evaluating factors such as unexpected pop-ups, misuse of browser APIs, and the overall intent of a webpage, the AI model can identify and mitigate threats before they cause harm. This on-device approach not only enhances detection speed but also bolsters user privacy, as data processing occurs locally without transmitting sensitive information to external servers. Users with Enhanced Protection mode enabled in Chrome will benefit from this added layer of security.

Google reports that the implementation of Gemini Nano has already led to a reduction in tech support scam incidents. The company plans to extend this AI-powered protection to other types of scams and to Chrome on Android devices later this year. To activate Enhanced Protection in Chrome, users can navigate to Settings > Privacy and Security > Security, and select the Enhanced Protection option. This setting provides proactive defense against a broader range of threats, including phishing and malware.

As cyber threats become increasingly sophisticated, Google’s integration of AI into its browser signifies a proactive step towards safeguarding users. By leveraging on-device intelligence, Chrome aims to offer a more secure and private browsing experience in the face of evolving online scams.
