DoT Launches International Incoming Spoofed Calls Prevention System

In a significant move to enhance digital safety, Jyotiraditya M. Scindia, the Minister of Communications and Development of North Eastern Region, launched the International Incoming Spoofed Calls Prevention System today.
The event, attended by Dr. Pemmasani Chandra Sekhar, Minister of State for Communications & Rural Development, alongside senior officials including the Secretary of Telecom, marks another important milestone in the Department of Telecommunications’ (DoT) ongoing efforts to protect citizens from cyber-crime.
Recent reports have highlighted a rise in cyber-criminal activities involving international spoofed calls that display Indian mobile numbers (+91-xxxxxxxxx). These calls, which appear to originate from within India, are actually made from abroad using manipulated calling line identities. Such spoofed calls have been linked to various fraudulent activities, including financial scams, impersonation of government officials, and generating panic through threats of disconnection from mobile services.
To combat this growing threat, the DoT has collaborated with Telecom Service Providers (TSPs) to develop a system capable of identifying and blocking these incoming international spoofed calls. Since the system became operational, it has successfully identified and blocked approximately 1.35 crore (or 90%) of the incoming calls masquerading as Indian numbers within just 24 hours. With the implementation of this system, Indian telecom subscribers can expect a significant decrease in spoofed calls originating from +91-xxxxxxx numbers.
