NHAI Partners with IIIT Delhi to Enhance Road Safety Using AI Technology
In a bid to improve road safety, the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Indraprastha Institute of Information Technology (IIIT) Delhi. This partnership will leverage Artificial Intelligence (AI) to enhance the availability and quality of road signs on national highways.
As part of this agreement, IIIT Delhi will conduct extensive surveys to collect imagery and data on the condition and presence of road signs along selected stretches of national highways, covering approximately 25,000 kilometers. Using AI, the collected data will be processed to accurately identify and classify road signs. The resulting survey report will include a geo-stamped inventory of existing signs, their structural condition, and other relevant information.
Additionally, IIIT Delhi will perform a gap analysis to compare survey findings with the road sign requirements outlined in the approved signage plans and the latest Codal provisions for high-speed corridors. This analysis aims to identify discrepancies and ensure the road signs meet current safety standards.
By utilizing AI and Geographic Information Systems (GIS), NHAI aims to boost road safety on national highways through innovative and advanced technological solutions.
