What is bringing Jeff Bezos to India?

The richest man in the world and the founder of Amazon, Jeff Bezos is all set to visit India in Jan 2020. During his visit, he is likely to meet PM Narendra Modi and kick off Amazon’s annual event around SME’s (Small Medium enterprises) which in India are at huge risk due to deep-pocketed E-commerce companies. 

 

Here are a few things you need to know about Bezos’s India visit:

·      Amazon is currently worried about changing e-commerce rules in India, having invested $5 billion in the ecosystem here. 

·      Bezos will highlight that Amazon’s presence in India will generate more jobs and is empowering SME’s and other small businesses. 

·      Currently Amazon India is under the scrutiny of Commerce and consumer ministries due to mounting complaints against the e-commerce giant. 

·      The traders body has accused Amazon of giving deep discounts to the consumers and  violating the FDI policies in India. 

·      This month Amazon has decided to infuse $650 million dollars into its 3 branches of the Indian unit- Amazon Pay (900 cr), Amazon Seller Services (3400 cr) and Amazon Retail (172.50 cr).
