US-Iran tensions: Why India has to worry?

Its only 6 days into a new year and the new decade, yet tensions among the world powers are hinting towards a probable third world war. ObserveNow explains in 3 steps on what has happened in the last couple of days between US and Iran which would be cause for worry for many including Indians:

1-   US assassinated Iran’s top general-

Qassem Soleimani was an Iranian major general in the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) and highly regarded by the general public in Iran. On 3rdJan a US drone strike on his convoy in Iraq ordered directly by US President Donald Trump killed Soleimani and his aides.

In terms of world affairs, Soleimani’s killing by the US is equivalent to Iran striking US Secretary of state and killing him. The fall of this revered general in Iran has caused a massive uproar in Iran and its allies in the middle-east which and the country has now vowed for revenge from the US.

From what it looks like this move is a provocation from the US to Iran and probably a reason to start a war and send forces in the country similar to what the US has previously done in Iraq and Afghanistan.

2-   Iran’s Retaliation-

This move to strike on Soleimani has ripple effects in Iran and the middle east with the potential to change the face of the earth in this new decade. Iranians have been holding solidarity marches in the country with the general public hungry for revenge from the US.

The top leadership has already announced that it will not abide by the key provisions 2015 Nuclear deal and work on its uranium enrichment. Addressing a huge crowd, Soleimani's daughter, Zeinab, said that the US and its ally Israel faced a "dark day" for her father's assassination.

"Crazy [Donald] Trump, don't think that everything is over with my father's martyrdom," she said in an address broadcast on state television, referring to the US president. Lebanon and Iraq have also come out in support of Iran and have said that Iran will not face this crisis alone.

3-  Impact on the world-

The assassination of Soleimaini who was regarded as one of the most powerful men in Iran has several implications. Already troubled middle east is shaking again, tensions between Iran and America are at its peak. And the world seems to be on the brink of an important event in history.

At present Soleimaini’s assassination has caused the third Iran-linked spike in oil prices in the space of a year. Brent crude prices climbed as much as 4.6%, to $69.30 per barrel, their highest point since May 2019, after the US announced it would end waivers to sanctions on Iranian oil imports.
